Lee takes second at mini tour stop

Advertiser Staff

Pearl City's Regan Lee celebrated making his first cut on the Gateway Tour by closing with a 6-under-par 66 yesterday to finish second in the mini tour's fourth event.

Lee, who opened with consecutive 68's, birdied three of the first four holes yesterday at Grayhawk Golf Course, near Phoenix. He made the turn at 2 under, then birdied four holes on the back to finish at 14 under 202.

Birdies on the 17th and 18th pulled Lee into second place alone, four shots behind winner Michael Walton (66—198).

Walton, who played the par-5's in 5 under, won $25,200. Lee won $14,000. The three players a shot behind Lee collected $6,900 each.

Next week is on off week. The next event is July 9-11 at McCormick Ranch. The 15-stop tour concludes Sept. 23-26 with its Tour Championship at TPC of Scottsdale.

Lee has won three of his past six Hawai'i events — the 2001 Waikoloa Open and this year's Mid-Pacific Open and Mililani Rainbow Open.

• Wilson rolls on: Hilo's Amanda Wilson continued her hot streak, shooting even-par 72 yesterday at Ko Olina Golf Club to win medalist honors at the U.S. Golf Association Girls Junior qualifier.

Wilson will represent Hawai'i at the 54th annual national event, along with Makawao's Lisa Kajihara (76), Hilo's Kira-Ann Murashige (76) and Honolulu's Stephanie Kono (77).

Kono, who gave up a chance to defend her state match play championship to try and qualify, defeated Ayumi Hori (77) on the fourth playoff hole to earn the final spot.

Since May, Wilson has come in second at the state high school championship and Jennie K. Wilson Invitational, won the Hawai'i All-Star Invitational and reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links.
