Shinto priests visiting Hawai'i

A delegation of 65 priests and guests from Dazaifu Tenmangu, a Shinto shrine in Japan, will visit the islands to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine next month.

The local shrine, Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha at 1239 Olomea St., is not the only reason for the celebration: This Shinto group is celebrating its 1,100th anniversary, as well.

The delegation, headed by chief priest Nobuyoshi Nishitakatsuji, will take part in several events, including a memorial service and wreath presentation for the Ehime Maru at 9:30 a.m. July 9 at Kaka'ako Waterfront Park; and a 10 a.m. anniversary celebration ceremony July 10 at the shrine, located between Houghtailing and Kohou streets.

Lecture on ho'oponopono

An updated look at the traditional Hawaiian process of ho'oponopono is the focus of a free lecture on "Self-Identity Through Ho'oponopono," scheduled for 7 p.m. July 19.

The 90-minute lecture will be held in the O'ahu Room of the Blaisdell Center.

The event is sponsored by the Foundation of I Inc., a private nonprofit organization.

The talk will focus on ho'oponopono as a way of developing the self, said Ku'oko'a Wong of the foundation.

Congregation chooses pastor

The Community Church of Honolulu earlier this month chose its associate pastor, the Rev. Mark Lee, to head the United Church of Christ congregation.

After a yearlong selection process, Lee was chosen as senior pastor after a committee narrowed the initial 11-candidate list to three finalists.

Lee, who attended Princeton Theological Seminary, replaced Wally Fukunaga, who now serves in the Kahala area.

The church, at 2345 Nu'uanu Ave., was founded in 1934.
