Stanley lifts U.S. men in volleyball

Former University of Hawai'i standout Clay Stanley had 10 kills and three blocks, and Dave McKienzie added nine kills and two blocks, leading the United States men's national volleyball team to a 25-8, 25-21, 26-24 sweep of Australia on Thursday night at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky.

Scott Bunker had match-highs in both aces (four) and blocks (four) and Adam Naeve had five kills, three aces and one block for the Americans (4-10 overall record).

The match was the second of a four-match series between the two teams. The final two matches will be played today and tomorrow.

MORE VOLLEYBALL

Willoughby sparks U.S.: Nicole Branagh had 16 kills and nine aces, and University of Hawai'i junior Kim Willoughby added 17 kills and one ace, leading the United States women's national volleyball training team to a 25-22, 27-25, 24-26, 25-17 victory over Puerto Rico Thursday night in a Pan American Cup pool play match at Ensenada, Mexico.

The U.S. improved to 1-1 in pool play after losing its opening match to Canada Wednesday night.

MARATHON

Weekly training sessions: Anyone interested in training for the Honolulu Marathon can join Honolulu Fit, which meets every Saturday until December as part of a 26-week regimen.

Early registration for Honolulu Fit continues today at 8 a.m. at Marathon Park across from the Ohana Waikiki Hobron Hotel at 343 Hobron Lane.

The program is led by coaches who have a combined experience in more than 100 marathons.

It includes weekly training tailored to ability level, educational seminars and social activities.

SOCCER

He Kini Popo finishes second: He Kini Popo, Hawai'i's over-40-years women's soccer team, upset the defending champions in the semifinal, butlost in the championship game of last week's National Veterans' Cup in Beckley, W.Va.

He Kini Popo rolled over Copa di Vida of Seattle, the 2001 national champions, 3-0. In the final against Camp Springs, Md., "we dominated the ball but couldn't put it in the net," said team member Holly Lau of the 1-0 loss.

Hawai'i's over-40 team had a 4-1 record in the tournament while Hawai'i Five-O, an over- 50 team, was eliminated with a 1-2 record. Both were select teams from the Women's Island Soccer Association.

Next year's National Veterans Cup will be held Aug. 6-10 at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park and will be the first United States Soccer Federation event in Hawai'i.

Honolulu Bulls fall in semifinals: The under-16 girls Ho-nolulu Bulls '86 Red team lost in the semifinals to the Sereno '86 Golden Eagles of Ariz., yesterday in the Snickers U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships at West Jordan, Utah.

The Bulls were the last Hawai'i team in the tournament.
