Service set for Tony Rodrigues

A service will be held Wednesday for Antonio "Tony" Rodrigues, a well-known boxing trainer who died June 21 in Riverbank, Calif. He was 79.

The Wailuku-born Rodrigues trained several world champions during his career as one of Hawai'i's most active boxing trainers. He was perhaps best known for working with World Boxing Association junior lightweight champion Ben Villaflor in the early 1970s.

He is survived by his wife, Octavia; six daughters; one son; four stepdaughters and two stepsons; a brother, August; a sister, Cecilia Diaz; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A service will be held 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at O'ahu Cemetery Chapel. No flowers, casual attire. There will be a private scattering of ashes.
