Suspect arrested in Kahala burglary

A police officer returned to his Kahala residence Thursday to find his home burglarized and the suspect sitting in a car in his driveway.

Police patrols were called to Keala'olu Street and determined that there had been forced entry to the home and that several items had been taken.

Among them were a .22-caliber handgun, a radio scanner and a bulletproof vest, as well as a wedding ring and a gold necklace. The scanner and vest were recovered later on Makaiwa Street, one block 'ewa of the home.

The suspect, 34, was arrested.

Suspect sought in youth's robbery

Police are seeking information leading to the arrest of a man who robbed a teenage student on the way to school on North King Street Feb. 14.

The man, described as being 18-20 years old, approached the victim, waiting on a bus stop bench, and asked what he was doing. The boy, 16, told him he was bound for school. The man put his hand in the boy's pants pocket and demanded all of his property.

The man handed back the victim's bus pass and other cards and photos from his backpack before he fled on foot in a kokohead direction.

He is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, 180 pounds with a medium build and tan complexion, with a tattoo on the right side of his neck. He had brown shoulder-length hair in a ponytail and brown eyes. The man wore a dark visor backward, a T-shirt, knee-length gray shorts with a blue rag hanging out, and black athletic shoes.

Man charged in December robbery

A 42-year-old Iwilei man was charged Thursday on suspicion of robbing a woman at knifepoint in December.

Craig M. Yoder was arrested and charged Thursday and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Yoder is charged with approaching a 44-year-old woman who was walking to her car on Sand Island Access Road, accompanied by her 11-year-old daughter, at about 7:15 p.m. Dec. 19.

He then allegedly placed a knife to her throat, demanded her purse and other bags and fled, police said.

Woman in custody after knife incident

Police arrested an 18-year-old woman Thursday night after she allegedly swung a knife at a Kailua restaurant manager who was having her car towed.

The woman and her boyfriend had parked illegally in the Zippy's parking lot on Oneawa Street about 10:20 p.m., police said. They returned just when the 24-year-old manager was having the car towed.

The woman swung a knife at the manager, who managed to disarm her, police said.

Police report telephone scam

CrimeStoppers and the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii are warning about a Canadian telephone scam in which victims are told to pay taxes or fees in advance of receiving prize money — advances that are not required under Canadian law.

O'ahu residents have reported that the caller instructs them to send the tax or processing-fee payment to an address in Quebec, Vancouver or Montreal before they claim their prize.

This week police have heard reports that the callers pose as agents for the "Canadian Federal Board of Claims" to appear legitimate.

One woman was told this week to send $4,750 for her prize claim. And last week a victim reportedly sent $14,000 in moneygrams to claim a $100,000 prize, police said.

The callers have used the names Jo L. Davenport and Charmaine Powell and have threatened the victims with arrest if they did not comply.

The scam has resurfaced periodically over the past few years, police said: In 1999, a victim sent $43,000 in four installments over three months, and in 2000, an elderly female sent about $37,000 in 10 installments over three months.
