Punahou boys, Kahuku girls lead title hunt

Lahainaluna's Everette Blando, center, celebrated after his team came in first in the boys third preliminary heat of the Hawai'i high school state paddling championships yesterday. The finals will begin today at 8:30 a.m. at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Both boys and girls state wrestling team championships are still up for grabs going into tonight's semifinals, finals and consolation bracket finals.

Punahou (67.5 points), Iolani (65) and St. Louis (64.5) are within three points of each other on the boys side, and Kahuku (64 points) leads Kamehameha's girls by only five points after yesterday's first day at Blaisdell Arena.

Kamehameha (48), Baldwin (47), McKinley (44) and Hilo (43) are bunched up behind the lead pack in the boys competition. In the girls tournament, Punahou (51.5) and Moanalua (45) are holding out hope for a final-day rush.

Individually, all but two top seeds moved on into tonight's semifinals.

In the boys tournament, top-seeded Ryan Wong of Kamehameha was upset 7-5 in two overtimes by Mililani's Justin Kawamata in the 130-pound division quarterfinals. Kawamata scored a takedown on the edge of the ring for the victory.

In the girls tournament, No. 1-seeded Dara Ching of Pearl City withdrew from the 130-pound competition due to a knee injury suffered before the tournament.

At 103, Castle's Tanya Miyasaki also withdrew, reportedly due to illness. Miyasaki was last year's state champion at 98 pounds but was unseeded at 103 this year.

And Moanalua's Gabrielle Nicholas, the 2001 state champion at 175, also did not wrestle because of a sprained ankle. Nicholas was unseeded this year.

Among the top wrestlers who did see action, top-seeded Justine Swafford of Kahuku survived a 7-6 quarterfinal scare at 98 pounds from Moanalua's Venus Bravo.

There were plenty of close matches to go around in the boys quarterfinals.

In the boys 112 division, No. 1 seed Nick Galloway of Waiakea advanced with a 5-3 quarterfinal victory over St. Louis' Raymond Peabody.

At 140, unbeaten Christian Kikuchi of Kamehameha, the No. 1 seed, got past Pearl City's Brian Denny 7-4 in the quarterfinals.

In the 152-pound quarterfinals, No. 1 seed Tommy Tamasese of Hawai'i Prep edged Punahou's Jason Owens 1-0.

At 215, St. Louis' Prince Brown, the No. 1 seed, defeated Leilehua's Rory Jones 4-2. And at 275, No. 1 seed Michael Mandaquit of Hilo edged Pearl City's William Vaana, 6-5.

Keeping score: Wrestling fans and the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association received a big boost from the title sponsor this year.

Dan Arita, chairman of Data House, donated two electronic three-sided scoreboards to the HHSAA worth about $4,000 each. The scoreboards alert fans to the time remaining, period and score.

Added to the four existing three-sided electronic scoreboards owned by schools, the tournament had a scoreboard operating for each of the six simultaneous matches going on throughout yesterday's matches.

Previously, the HHSAA had use of only three scoreboards, meaning fans could only see scores of the other three matches if they sat directly in front of the cardboard "flip cards" used to keep score.

"This really adds to the tournament," HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya said. "Now you can see the score of every match from anywhere in the arena."

The three scoreboards used in past tournaments are owned by Kamehameha.

A fourth, owned by Punahou, is new and was added this year.

PADDLING

The preliminary heats, quarterfinals and semifinal races were held yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon in the first state high school championship in canoe paddling.

The finals will be run today with opening ceremonies at 8 a.m. and championship races at 8:30.

Although the Legislature designated outrigger canoe paddling as the state's official team sport in 1986, the only high school league conducting the sport until 2000 was the private-school Interscholastic League of Honolulu. But this year, all five leagues — Maui, Kaua'i, the Big Island and two on O'ahu — will take part.

Each school is sponsored by a paddling club, which provides the canoes, paddles and coaches.

Also tomorrow, the A.E. "Toots" Minvielle Invitational Regatta will be held following the state championships.

A children-only (10-18 in age), two-day event brings competitors from Tahiti, Maui, Kaua'i, the Big Island and O'ahu.

The event culminates tomorrow with one-man canoe races. Races begin at 10 a.m.
