Wallace named WAC Coach of the Year

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i head coach Riley Wallace, who led the Rainbow Warriors to a share of the conference regular-season title, was named Coach of the Year as the Western Athletic Conference announced its postseason award winners today.

UH senior guard Predrag Savovic was named to the first team while sophomore guard/forward Carl English was selected to the second team.

Fresno State center Melvin Ely was named the WAC's Player of the Year and Rice forward Michael Harris was named Freshman of the Year.

The team was selected by the league's 10 head coaches.

Wallace has led UH to a 24-5 overall record, including 15-3 in the WAC. UH is tied for first with Tulsa but will get the top seed in this week's WAC Tournament because it defeated Tulsa twice this season.

UH's first game in the tournament is 8 a.m. Thursday against an opponent to be determined.

Also today, English was named the WAC's Player of the Week.

English, from Newfoundland, Canada, averaged 24.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in games played Thursday and Saturday.

With leading scorer Savovic sidelined with back spasms, English led UH to a title-clinching victory over Fresno State, 82-79. He scored 33 points, including 27 in the first half.
