Waikiki road to reopen after main breaks

By Mike Gordon

Repair crews fixed broken sewer, gas and water lines in Waikiki today and were scheduled to reopen a portion of Seaside Avenue at 7:30 tonight, said Board of Water Supply spokeswoman Denise DeCosta said.

The problem began yesterday afternoon with a break in an 8-inch Honolulu Board of Water Supply feeder line to the Waikiki Trade Center.

Police closed Seaside Avenue between Lau'ula Avenue and Kuhio Avenue at 4:40 p.m. yesterday and were planning to keep it closed to traffic until repairs were made.

City crews cleared debris for several hours yesterday, but as they were digging a hole so they could repair the water line, they ruptured a gas line, DeCosta said.

It brought their work to a halt.

Steven Golden, spokesman for The Gas Company, said the workers broke a 2-inch service line that is used for two restaurants in the trade center.

Water supply crews had wrapped the line with tape by the time gas company crews arrived at 5:30 a.m., he said. Repairs to that gas line were finished by 7 a.m. followed by repairs to the sewer line that also was broken.
