Examiners hope leg yields identity clues

Advertiser Staff

City medical examiners and military forensic experts are working today to gain clues about the identity of the person whose leg was found on a reef off Hanauma Bay on Saturday.

The remains consisting of nearly the full set of bones, from the hip socket to the toe were spotted by a diver in 30 feet of water, near the area known as Toilet Bowl, at about 11 a.m.

An ocean safety staffer said a lifeguard on a jet ski brought the limb from the diving vessel to shore.

The leg, except for part of the foot, was devoid of flesh, but a forensic examination may be able to establish the victim's gender and approximate height, said Susan Siu, chief medical examiner, whose office will be collaborating with the Army's Central Identification Laboratory, Hawai'i.

Police are awaiting the forensic report before investigating a possible match with anyone in its missing persons files.
