• "Using Census 2000 DatA for Your Individual Needs" — including newly released breakdowns of ethnic representation in Hawai'i population — will be the focus of two free public workshops, sponsored in part by the state and the U.S. Census Bureau. The detailed information is offered for use in business and financing proposals; social service delivery and planning; and assessment of community needs. Jerry Wong, an information specialist with the Los Angeles Regional Office of the Census Bureau, will present the workshops, which are co-sponsored by the Hawai'i Small Business Development Center. • Greg Brenneman, who is heading up the proposed merger of the two major interisland airlines, will be among participants in a morning/luncheon meeting held by the PACIFIC ASIA TRAVEL ASSOCIATION. The event, centered on "Creating a Flagship Carrier for the State of Hawai'i: An Update on the Aloha/Hawaiian Airlines Merger," is scheduled at the Mauna Kea Ballroom of the Hawai'i Prince Hotel, with registration at 8:30 a.m. There will be two discussions:

  • 10 a.m. "A LEGISLATOR'S PERSPECTIVE ON TOURISM IN HAWAI'I," with state Senator Donna Kim, Tourism Chair.
  • 10:30 a.m. "Visitor Forecasts, Outlook and Perspectives," with Bank of Hawaii chief economist Paul Brewbaker; Pearl Imada Iboshi, chief economist at the Research and Economic Analysis Division of the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism; and Joseph Toy, president and chief executive officer of Hospitality Advisors LLC.

• Individual financial portfolios will be reviewed without charge during an investment seminar offered by Edward Jones financial services. The discussion, "Investing: Smart and Simple," will include tips on lowering the amount of taxes you pay; retirement advice; and a prognosis of the economy and financial markets. • "DANCING WITH ANGELS IN HAWAI'I: Secrets of Getting Your Startup Funded," will be the topic of a speech that is part of the University of Hawai'i business school discussion series, Kipapa i ke Ala (Paving the Way). John May will discuss why angel investment is essential to the growth of technology in Hawai'i and how companies that are not necessarily "high-tech" can meet the criteria for such up-front investment. May, a seasoned venture capitalist, is co-founder of the Washington, D.C., New Vantage Group that manages "next-generation," early-stage venture money for active angel investors. He is also co-author of "Every Business Needs an Angel." He will speak from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the UH-Manoa School of Architecture auditorium, Room 205. • Beverly Cabrera, executive director of the Hawai'i Women's Business Center, will outline how women can empower other women through education, resources and networking, noon to 4 p.m. at Borders Books at Ward Centre. This is part of the "AMAZING WOMAN — AMAZING WORLD DAY" national celebration. Business leaders, authors, coaches and others will share insights on the day's theme: "Awakening the Potential Within Us." Also speaking will be Kristine Woodall of the Hawai'i Women's Business Center, who will describe her journey from single mother on welfare to college graduate and prospective entrepreneur.
