Leg found in bay undergoing tests

Police investigating the discovery of a human leg Saturday in Hanauma Bay note that four men have vanished between 1994 and 2001 in O'ahu waters or along the Ka Iwi coastline.

Officer Joe Self of the missing persons detail said the leg could belong to Michael Ng, Glenn Gold, Eugene Ambard or Lance Masuda. But it could also be an entirely new case, he said.

Police are awaiting results of examinations by the Honolulu Medical Examiner, which is being assisted by the Army Central Identification Laboratory-Hawai'i.

"We don't know who this might be," Self said. "We have several people missing out in that area. Apparently it is a tall person. That we know. So we eliminated the females."

The leg — consisting of nearly all the bones from the hip socket to the toes — was spotted by a diver in 30 feet of water, near the area known as Toilet Bowl, about 11 a.m. Saturday.

A lifeguard brought the limb to shore. The leg, except for part of the foot, was devoid of flesh.

Dr. Kanthi Von Guenthner, the city's chief medical examiner, said officials are hoping the Army lab can determine the gender and height of the person, and possibly even the ethnicity.
