Baseball tourneys feature top prep teams

Two preseason high school baseball tournaments on different islands are scheduled for this weekend.

The fourth King Kekaulike tournament runs Thursday through Saturday at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, Maui.

The tournament features host King Kekaulike, St. Anthony, Maui and Baldwin from the Maui Interscholastic League; Kealakehe and Konawaena from the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, and Radford of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association.

There will be a home run derby at 6 p.m. Friday between games.

On O'ahu, the 10th Mililani High Invitational runs Friday through Sunday. Friday's opening round is at various sites with the rest of the tournament to be played at the Trojans' campus field.

Defending state champion Kailua, 'Aiea, Roosevelt, Kamehameha, St. Louis, Iolani, Mid-Pacific and host Mililani make up the tournament field.

Here are the tournaments' opening day schedules:

4th King Kekaulike Tournament, Wailuku, Maui

Thursday—Radford vs. St. Anthony, 10:30 a.m.; Kealakehe vs. Baldwin, 1 p.m.; Kealakehe vs. King Kekaulike, 3:30 p.m.; Konawaena vs. Maui, 6:30 p.m.

10th Mililani High Invitational

Friday—Game 1, Kamehameha vs. Kailua at Joey DeSa Field, 3:30 p.m.; Game 2, St. Louis at 'Aiea, 3:30 p.m.; Game 3, Iolani at Mililani, 3:30 p.m.; Game 4, Roosevelt at Mid-Pacific, 3:30 p.m.

SAILING

UH second: The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team finished second in the championship bracket at the Jeremy D. McIntyre Team Intersectional Sunday at Palo Alto, Calif.

Boston College won the event. UC-Santa Barbara finished third, with USC and host Stanford rounding out the top five.

The Hawai'i coed team is currently ranked fifth nationally, and the Wahine team ninth in Sailing World magazine.

GOLF

UH 15th: The University of Hawai'i women's golf team is in 15th place after the first day of the San Jose Spartan Invitational at Salinas, Calif.

California leads the 16-team field with 289. Pepperdine is second at 294, and Oklahoma State third at 297.

Kristin Scholl led Hawai'i with a 7-over-par 79 that put her in a tie for 52nd. Cal's Ria Quiazon leads with a 68.

CORRECTION

Cheerleading coach: Dolly Wong is coach of the Kamehameha team that won the inaugural Hawai'i High School Athletic Association cheerleading championship in the medium-size squad division Sunday. Another surname was reported in yesterday's Advertiser.
