Garbage truck overturns on H-3

No injuries were reported in an accident yesterday in which a commercial garbage truck overturned in the Kane'ohe-bound lanes of the H-3 Freeway.

The driver lost control of the truck about three miles from the tunnel, said a spokesman for Horizon Waste Services of Hawaii, the truck's owner. The driver reportedly spotted a car on the freeway shoulder and slowed to avoid hitting anyone who might be walking in the area, the spokesman said.

The truck reportedly skidded on the wet road, struck the guard rail on the right and overturned.

Japan fishing boat crew member dies

A critically ill crew member on a Japanese fishing boat died yesterday shortly after he was flown by the Coast Guard to O'ahu.

Fukuo Miura, chief engineer of the Shoun Maru No. 151, was hoisted from the vessel onto a Coast Guard helicopter about 7 a.m. yesterday. The Shoun Maru was about 80 miles north of O'ahu when its crew reported that Miura was critically ill.

Coast Guard aviation survival technician Gabe Sage was lowered to the vessel, and he reported that Miura was suffering from a possible bleeding ulcer and had a weak pulse. Sage performed CPR on Miura throughout the 45-minute flight to Kuakini Medical Center, the Coast Guard said.

A hospital spokesman said Miura died in the emergency room yesterday morning.

Attempted murder case reclassified

Police yesterday reclassified an attempted murder case to an investigation into possible terroristic threatening charges against three people reportedly involved in a shooting Sunday beneath the Nimitz Highway and River Street bridge.

The victim, 42, reportedly suffered a cut hand in the incident, in which he said he was held against his will beneath the bridge by two men, 43 and 41, and a 43-year-old woman.

The victim told police that the suspects thought he was an undercover officer and that the woman told the men to shoot him. A shot was fired into the water, and the man then said he leaped into Nu'uanu Stream and waded toward the Chinatown police substation.

Police said possible suspects have been located, but no arrests have been made.
