Donations aid Punahou after $50,000 theft

By Mike Gordon

Donations have quietly been made to help replace the theft of $50,000 in Punahou Carnival receipts, but officials at the private school are not saying how much has been given or from whom.

"We have received several donations," said Bonnie Judd, Punahou Schools spokeswoman. "We are very grateful. It is amazing that people stepped forward, parents and other donors." She said the school considers any donation "a generous donation."

"We are, of course, hopeful that something will develop and the matter will be resolved," Judd said.

Police continue to investigate the theft, which occurred in the final hours before the carnival ended at 11 p.m. on Feb. 2. The money was taken from a safe in the school's business office and there was no sign of forced entry.

Police have a long list of people to interview, said Lt. Sherman Chan, head of the East Honolulu district's burglary and theft detail.

"A lot of people had access to that building maintenance people, administrative people," Chan said. "There are so many people who had the opportunity, we are not ruling anybody out. We are keeping an open mind."
