Once you go underground, it can be hard to find your way back to the surface.

A 17-year-old Kailua boy discovered that this morning when he had to call for help getting back out of a storm drain into which he'd crawled and then become lost.

Firefighters were called at 7:09 this morning to1480 Aupupu St., where a contractor doing a building job heard cries coming from the storm drain.

The teen had crawled in through a manhole at another, unknown location, said Capt. Peer Blichfeldt of the Olomana fire station.

"He had been crawling around for a half hour and became lost," Blichfeldt said.

The only manhole nearby had been paved over, he added, and the same contractor who had called 911 supplied rescuers with tools and helped chip away the asphalt over the manhole. The youth re-emerged onto the street surface at 7:30 a.m., Blichfeldt said.
