United plans 4th flight to Kona

KEAHOLE, Hawai'i United Airlines will add a fourth Mainland flight to Kona starting in June, officials told Kona business leaders.

Ross Wilson Jr. of Current Events, a Kona promotions company, said the new San Francisco to Keahole flight will start June 7, arriving in Kona at 6:45 p.m. and returning at 9:45 p.m.

Many airlines, which cut service to Hawai'i following the Sept. 11 attacks, are increasing capacity now in anticipation of higher demand heading into the summer season. American Airlines said earlier this week that it would start a new nonstop daily service between Los Angeles and Kaua'i on June 15.

The new United flight will give Kona two daily United flights from San Francisco and two from Los Angeles.

Wilson said United will use a Boeing 757 aircraft with 178-seat capacity on the flight.

United has been flying to the Big Island since inaugurating service to Hilo in the 1960s. Japan Air Lines also flies daily from Tokyo to Kona using Boeing 747s and Aloha Airlines has a daily flight to Kona from Oakland.
