THE LEFT LANE
Roll those cameras
Students aspiring to be the next Allen, Kubrick or Scorsese have a chance to showcase their works at the Hawai'i International Film Festival's third annual Hawai'i Student Film Festival, open to filmmakers at elementary, intermediate, high school and college levels.
Categories include short films (no longer than 15 minutes), feature films and documentary films (both no longer than 30 minutes).
The student film festival will take place statewide, a first for the annual event, said coordinator Paul Booth. The fest takes place on O'ahu April 26-28 at Signature's Dole Cannery 18-Plex.
There's no cost to submit an entry. The deadline is March 15. To get an entry form, e-mail pkb_1@hotmail.com or call (808) 823-9208.

A taste for movies
Zagat is going to the movies.
Tim and Nina Zagat (zagat.com/surveys) are operating online to collate public opinion on 1,800 films in their first movie guide.
For 20 years, the Zagats, through consumer response, have ranked restaurants, hotels, shops and nightspots. Now, they're aiming at movies, asking critic wannabes to vote online, rating classic (and not-so-classic) movies in overall excellence, acting, story line and production quality, utilizing the customary 30 (for high) and 0 (for gawd-awful) rankings.
Those sharing their thumbs up (or down) by March 15 will receive a copy of the movie guide when it is published next fall.
