Salt Lake man indicted in bomb hoax

Advertiser Staff

A federal grand jury yesterday indicted a Salt Lake man on charges that he falsely accused three men of having a bomb on board a China Airlines flight at Honolulu Airport on Feb. 8.

Clayton Yip is accused of acting on a grudge with his fake bomb call.
Clayton Yip, 29, was arrested March 1 and ordered held without bail yesterday.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday and, if convicted, faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth Sorenson said Yip had a grudge against the three on the flight and reported that they were Vietnamese terrorists with a bomb. Although there was no explosive, Sorenson said, the flight was delayed and the three men were taken off the plane and searched.
