Amateur Stroke Play Championship begins

Advertiser Staff

Defending champion Randy Shibuya, 12-year-old phenom Michelle Wie and 113 other top golfers are scheduled to tee off today in the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country Club.

The tournament, which starts with an 11:19 tee time today, will continue through Sunday. Golfers will tee off beginning at 7 a.m. tomorrow and 11:05 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Shibuya rallied to win last year's title by one stroke over Gabriel Wilson, who also is entered in the tournament.

Others notables in the field include the University of Hawai'i's Asao brothers, Kellen-Floyd and Norman-Ganin, reigning Mayor's Cup champion Mark Chun and veteran amateurs Brandan Kop and Joe Phengsavath.
