Hawai'i chefs sweeten up May Day festivities

WHAT'S COOKIN': The Hawaiian Island Chefs will present a May Day event that sounds like ono fun. Na Leo will perform at the event, set from 6 to 9 p.m. Lei Day (May 1), at the Hawai'i Prince Hotel. A hula halau may be enlisted, too. And D.K. Kodama of Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar, one of the planners, said all attending should wear a lei. "We're also planning to do a lei contest," said Kodama, so start thinking of something grand.

Chefs creating the grinds: James McDonald of Pacific 'O and I'o, Hiroshi Fukui of L'Uraku, Goran Streng of the Prince Restaurant, Steven Ariel and Lance Kosaka of Alan Wong's Pineapple Room, Chai Chaowasaree of Chai's Island Bistro, George Gomes of Sarento's Kihei, Russell Siu of 3660 on the Rise, Doug Lum of Mariposa, Teresa Gannon Shurilla of Hali'imaile General Store, Jackie Lau of Roy's, Corey Waite of the Hapuna Prince Hotel, and Mark Okamura of Alan Wong's.

TUBE TALK: Anthony Ruivivar, the Honolulan who co-stars on NBC-TV's "Third Watch," is pictured with his fellow cast members in this month's In Style, as part of the magazine's tribute to heroes. His biggest fans, mom Karen Ruivivar and grandmother Ethel Walker, already bought multiple copies for keepsakes and sharing with friends. The bigger news is that Ruivivar and his actress-wife, Yvonne Jung, have been told a baby boy will join the family this August. ...

KCCN-FM 100 morning man Billy V. (as in Van Osdol) is moving to KHON Fox 2, at least for an hour this Sunday, when he joins reporter Donalyn Dela Cruz as tag-team partners/hosts of the 8th annual Honolulu Festival Grand Parade, to be televised live. ...

NAMES 'N' FACES: Harry B. Soria Jr., who plays host to "Territorial Airwaves" from 5 to 6 p.m. Sundays on Hawaiian 105 KINE-FM, pays tribute this weekend to the late Al Lopaka, the genial singer who was killed in a polo accident at age 42. ...

Jay Chandrasekhar, the director and co-star of the "Super Troopers" film, has been visiting here. ...

Maryknoll School alumna Nina Keali'iwahamana Rapozo, a veteran entertainer, will be saluted at Maryknoll's fifth annual Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Award and Scholarship Dinner on March 17. MENTIONABLES: For her Thursday gig at Duc's Bistro, Mihana Souza — also known as I. Mihana — got a call from Auntie Betty Ikehara, a friend, saying a haku had been made especially with Mihana in mind. It was a beautiful rust-hued number. So happens that designer Sarai Strickland was in from Moloka'i for dinner that night, wearing one of her rust creations. She literally gave the dress off her back so Mihana could wear the matching lei and outfit on a TV appearance the next morning. ...

Iva Kinimaka, a successful restaurateur and a semi-retired entertainer, recently had a hole-in-one at the Bay View Golf Course. He used an 8-iron from 109 yards to sink the ball, and "it only took him 61 years to do it," said son Hale Kinimaka, one of the witnesses, who also is marketing manager at Duke's Waikiki. Johnny Fernandez, a member of Society of Seven Las Vegas, also witnessed the historic moment. ...
