An analysis released by Hickam Air Force Base shows that the military post contributed $538.5 million to the local economy for fiscal 2001, an increase of about $43 million over the previous year.
According to an "economic impact statement" compiled by the 15th Comptroller Squadron, payroll, major construction and services, supplies and equipment contracts contributed to the increase, but the greatest increase was attributed to payroll for base employees.
Payroll for base employees, both military and civilian, rose by $30 million for a total of $382.8 million, officials said.
Major construction contracts remained steady at $41 million. Contracts for services, supplies and equipment decreased slightly to $74.6 million.
The number of people employed at the base decreased by more than 100 over the year, to 9,701 people. The estimated annual value of jobs created was $122.7 million.
The total number of personnel at Hickam, including active duty, Air National Guard, dependents, civil service and other civilians was 16,471 at the time the report was compiled.
The economic impact statement reflects the resources and economic impact of the Air Force base on the surrounding community for the period beginning Oct. 1, 2000, through Sept. 30, 2001.
