Seattle Pacific rips BYUH, 82-57

The Brigham Young University-Hawai'i men's basketball team saw its season come to an end with an 82-57 loss to Seattle Pacific yesterday in the NCAA Division II West Regional in San Bernardino, Calif.

PacWest Player of the Year Alexus Foyle scored 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting to lead the way for the Seasiders, while Scott Salisbury added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Yuta Tabuse led the Seasiders with nine assists.

Nick Johnson scored 27 points to lead the Falcons, who shot 57 percent from the field.

BYU-Hawai'i, which received an at-large berth to the regional tournament, ends the season at 19-10.

Third-seeded Seattle Pacific, ranked No. 8 in the nation, improves to 24-4 and will face No. 2 seed Humboldt State (24-3) in a semifinal today.


GOLF

• Gomi leads after first round: Clayton Gomi shot a 4-under 68 yesterday to lead after one round of the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country Club.

Gomi leads Mituyuki Kurokawa and Phillip Anamizu by one stroke. Defending champion Randy Shibuya is two strokes back at 70, followed by Sam Pratt (71) and Jarrett Hamamoto (72).

A group of six players is five strokes back at 73.

Punahou seventh-grader, Michelle Wie, the only female in the tournament, shot a 75 (37-38) in the opening round.

The second round begins today at 7 a.m., with the third round set for tomorrow and the final round Sunday.


SOFTBALL

• UH rolls to win: Sheri Oronoz went 6 1/3 innings before allowing a hit to Jodi Spino in the top of the seventh as the University of Hawai'i defeated New Mexico State, 4-0, last night in the Chevron Malihini Softball Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Oronoz struck out five and walked two to improve her record to 9-4.

Stacie Hirano, April Crowell and Denise Dahlberg each had two hits for the Wahine (15-10). New Mexico State falls to 10-18.

In the first game of the tournament, Oregon State defeated Loyola Marymount, 3-2.

• U.S. Cup to return to Honolulu: USA Softball announced yesterday that it will return to Honolulu in July to play the U.S. Cup with the five top-ranked teams in the world.

Four games will be played at University of Hawai'i Wahine Softball Stadium each day from July 4-7, running from morning to evening.

The first U.S. Cup was played at the same site last year.

Current world rankings of the entrants are No. 1 USA, No. 2 Japan, No. 3 Australia, No. 4 China and No. 5 Canada. Canada joins the four teams that participated last year.

The U.S. Cup will be the first official competition of the season for the American team. Two teams will be selected in tryouts May 30-June 2 at Chula Vista, Calif. They will scrimmage at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista before one team departs for Hawai'i.

USA will attempt to win an unprecedented fifth straight world championship at the International Softball Federation tournament in Saskatoon, Canada, July 25-Aug. 4. Since capturing the first of its six world titles in 1986, Team USA has amassed a 44-1 record.


WATER POLO

• Zone champs: Hawai'i's Youth Zone Team was undefeated in four games last weekend in a USA Water Polo tournament with teams from Oregon and Washington at Newberg, Ore.

All eight members of the Hawai'i team qualified for the National Selection Games in California in May with 10 other U.S. zone teams. Two national teams will be selected for further training by the USA national team coaches.

The Hawai'i team members are Damon Jones, Tim Brown and Luke Oda of Iolani; goalie Robbie Field, Kyle Morgan, C.J. Smith and Arik Look of Punahou and Shaun Kauihou of Kamehameha. They were coached by Ben Nary of Chaminade.
