Using underwater scooters, Honolulu Fire Department scuba divers searched offshore Hawai'i Kai yesterday for the second time in recent days, but found no additional human remains that could shed more light on a leg bone found submerged near Hanauma Bay last Saturday.
Barring any new developments, police yesterday said they planned to suspend the search that has already covered nearly a mile of jagged underwater coastline from Hanauma Bay to Lana'i Lookout.
Yesterday, divers hugged the coastline exploring nooks and crannies in more than 20 feet of water off Lana'i Lookout to the mouth of Hanauma Bay from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
"I hope we find out who this guy is," said Phil Camero of the HPD's Missing Persons Detail.
The divers were assisting the Honolulu Police Department on the "unattended death" case opened one week ago when a diver found a human left leg consisting of nearly all the bones from the hip socket to the toes in 30 feet of water near the Toilet Bowl area.
Divers searched near Lana'i Lookout because people have been lost in that area before, Camero said. On Tuesday, divers searched four hours, near Hanauma Bay and Toilet Bowl, but were hampered by rough ocean conditions.
Police were awaiting results of examinations of the leg by the Honolulu Medical Examiner, which is being assisted by the Army Central Identification Laboratory-Hawai'i.
