Clayton Gomi retained his top spot after shooting a 1-under 71 yesterday in the second round of the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country Club.

Michelle Wie, the Punahou seventh-grader who is the lone female in the tournament, shot a 72, leaving her in a tie for fifth place with five others, eight strokes back at 147.

Randy Shibuya, who won the tournament last year, is six strokes back at 145.

The third round begins today at 11:05 a.m. at Pearl Country Club.

SOFTBALL

UH drops two: The University of Hawai'i softball team dropped a pair of games yesterday, falling to Loyola Marymount, 2-1, and Oregon State, 1-0, at the Chevron Malihini Softball Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Against Loyola Marymount, the Wahine struck first when April Crowell drove in Stacie Hirano in the top of the first. LMU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Corianne Rogalsky home run and a Hawai'i error.

In Hawai'i's second game, the Beavers scored in the bottom of the second when Shelly Prochaska scored on a Hawai'i error. Oregon State pitcher Monica Hoffman kept the Wahine hitless, striking out five and walking none.

Hawai'i falls to 15-12 on the season, while LMU improves to 12-15 and OSU to 22-7.

Games continue today at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

BASEBALL

Hilo wins: Johnny Dudoit went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs to lead the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to a 6-5 victory over Santa Clara University last night at Francis Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Clay Daugherty picked up the win for the Vulcans, pitching one inning of relief. Daugherty improved to 1-1.

Hilo banged out 12 hits, with Kaliko Oligo going 3-for-5 and scoring twice.

John Redmond (3-2) took the loss for the Broncos, giving up 11 hits, six runs (all earned) while striking out three and walking one in 6¡ innings.

Hilo improves to 4-22-1 on the season, while Santa Clara falls to 6-11.

SURFING

Slater wins: Kelly Slater eliminated current No. 1 and fellow Floridian CJ Hobgood in the third round of the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks, Australia, yesterday.

Surf remained in the 4- 5-foot range, with northeast winds increasing throughout the day, creating a slight chop on the otherwise hollow wave faces.

"I knew I needed to make sure my first wave was a quality one, and it seemed that my timing was right," Slater said. "It worked out, and I got three solid waves with nice open faces all the way down the point. I was in sync and he was out of rhythm."

Slater will next face two-time ASP world junior champion Joel Parkinson of Australian in the next round.

"Having Joel in the next heat is fitting, I think," Slater said. "It's perfect for me to keep my motivation going."

Hobgood, 22, never really found form during the 25-minute heat. His highest score was only a 6.0, and he fell on a number of rides. As he later acknowledged, the desire to beat Slater, clouded his ability to relax and surf.

"Maybe I was trying too hard," Hobgood said. "I was so pumped up. I made a couple of mistakes in the beginning and it was over. I think I would have lost to anyone then. I just blew it."

In other action, Damien Hobgood eliminated an in-form Shane Dorian of Hawai'i after knocking off 2000 world champion Sunny Garcia, also of Hawai'i, in the morning.
