Achievers

Wainani Dombrowski of Moanalua High and Russell Soon of Kamehameha Schools were among 665 high-school seniors nationwide honored in November by the National Council of Teachers of English as recipients of the 2001 Achievement Award in Writing. The students and their schools received certificates of commendation.

These students received perfect scores at a recent O'ahu Math League meet: Blake Kawamoto, Kelly Nakamura, Ricky Nguyen, Ravi Patel and Anne Yeung, Iolani School; Alika Ah New, Kamehameha Schools. About 30 high schools and more than 300 students participate in the league each month.

The winners of the 2001-2002 Voice of Democracy Scholarship, presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its ladies' auxiliary, Department of Hawai'i, are: Maisel J. Caliva of Waipahu High, first place; Ling Lu of Sacred Hearts Academy, second place; and Byron J. Weaver of Hawai'i Mission Academy and Jade M. Palomino of Seabury Hall, third place tie. Caliva received $800 and an all-expenses-paid trip in April to Washington, D.C., for the national competition. The other winners received $600, $300 and $300, respectively.

The winners of the organization's Youth Essay Contest are: Renee Firing of Sacred Hearts, first place; Daniel Park of Central Middle, second place; Jaclyn Park of Sacred Hearts, third place; and Michael Hirae of Hawai'i Baptist Academy, fourth place. Firing received $400 and her essay was submitted for the national competition. The others received $300, $200 and $100, respectively.
