Asao leads by two at stroke play event

Norman-Ganin Asao shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Golf Championship at Pearl Country Club.

Asao has a three-round total of 213.

Clayton Gomi, who led the opening two rounds of the tournament, is two shots behind Asao after shooting a 76 yesterday.

Punahou seventh-grader Michelle Wie, the only female in the tournament, shot an even-par 72 yesterday and is at 219 along with defending champion Randy Shibuya.

Three golfers — Junior Agpaoa, Joe Phengsavath and Yuuki Ishikawa — are tied for third place at 216.

The tournament's final round begins today at 11:05 a.m.


BASEBALL

• Hilo falls to Santa Clara: Santa Clara beat the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, 9-7, at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona yesterday in a non-conference collegiate baseball game.

The Vulcans led 6-3 at the bottom of the fourth following a Keola Park single that scored Darren Chu and Johnny Dudoit.

The Broncos (7-13) scored five runs in the top of the eighth, led by A.J. LaBarbera's single that drove in two runs, to make it 9-6.

Park scored the final run for the Vulcans (4-23-1) on a Chad Agustin double.

The teams face off again in today's doubleheader starting at 10:30 a.m. at Simmons Field.


SURFING

• Parkinson wins title: Australia's Joel Parkinson defeated Cory Lopez of the United States in the final of the Quiksilver Pro yesterday at Snapper Rocks, Australia, to claim the $30,000 top prize.

Parkinson had earlier eliminated Florida's Kelly Slater en route to the final.

"It's a great start to the year," Parkinson said. "I just hope the roll keeps going. A few more wins through the year would be awesome."

Shea Lopez, of the United States, and Australia's Mark Occhilupo tied for third.


QUARTERBACK CLUB

• Lumpkin, Okita to speak: Tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club will feature University of Hawai'i assistant head football coach George Lumpkin and Howard Okita, the head coach of the Hawai'i Pacific softball team.

Hardy Spoehr, president of the Hawai'i Officials Association, will be presenting the annual officials recognition awards.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant and Hotel, with the program to follow at noon. The public is invited.


WATER POLO

• Rainbow Wahine lose: Christine Welsh scored four goals as No. 5 San Jose State defeated No. 12 Hawai'i, 8-5, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

San Jose State improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Rainbow Wahine fell to 7-5 and 1-2 in their home opener.

Beth Novick scored three goals and Chelsea Garner-Prohs two for Hawai'i.

The Rainbow Wahine play host to No. 1 Stanford today at 3 p.m.
