The state's controversial traffic camera program, which a Senate veto of last week promises to send into legislative conference committee next month, will be the subject of a March 20 address by state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Marilyn Kali. Two gatherings are scheduled Thursday for those wanting to do business with the state or federal government:
"DOING BUSINESS ONLINE WITH THE STATE OF HAWAI'I," is the focus of a free seminar sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i, in which state officials will guide attendees through online contract notices, bidding procedures, licensing and registration, and other matters of interest to those businesses using new technologies of the Internet. Participating will be Joe Blanco, special adviser to the governor on high technology; experts from the University of Hawai'i, Office of Procurement, and technical experts from NetEnterprise Inc. Businesses wanting to sell to the federal government including suppliers, contractors and vendors are invited to a one-day seminar sponsored by the local chapter of the National Contract Management Association. The gathering, "Government Contracts 202: Advanced Federal Contracting," is designed to help local companies obtain contracting opportunities available from Hawai'i-based Federal Procurement Offices. "How Did a Nice Person from Kaka'ako Get Into Retail?," will be the question asked and answered by Emme Tominbang, local personality and president of EMME Inc., in a keynote address Friday to the conference of the International Council of Shopping Centers, Hawai'i chapter. Also planned are two panel discussions on Hawai'i tourism industry updates and trends, and local retailers who have found a successful entertainment mix in the local market. Today is the deadline to register for Fusion 2002: Hawaii's New Venture Showcase, presented by Pacific Business Forums and sponsored by Hawai'i Pacific University. The program is a business competition and showcase for anyone interested in securing bank, angel or venture capital financing for their business plans. Experts from Hawai'i and abroad will counsel the teams and dozens of venture capitalists are expected from the Mainland and Asia for the finale June 21.
Anyone with a coherent business plan and serious desire to implement it can apply. Five winners will be selected by a panel of judges. Cash and service awards will total $100,000.
The business plan must be for a business based in or destined for Hawai'i or Asia, or from a Hawai'i resident living abroad.

The 23rd annual Pele Awards ceremonies, honoring the best Hawai'i-created broadcast, print and online advertising and graphic design, are scheduled Saturday: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., cocktails and pupu; 7:30 to 10 p.m., awards ceremonies, Hilton Hawaiian Village, Tapa Ballroom.
