THE LEFT LANE
A wake-up vibrator??

Does the shrill ringing of the alarm clock get you up on the wrong side of the bed? The Shakeawake alarm offers a kinder, gentler way to start your day. Instead of emitting a piercing noise, the palm-sized alarm vibrates you awake.

The Shakeawake was originally designed for the hearing-impaired, but is now finding a place under the pillows of the morning-impaired, bedmates and roommates on different schedules and shift workers. As part of the post-Sept. 11 trauma, it was handed out to New York police and fire fighters to help them get through their odd-timed shifts.

The alarm sells for about $30. Call 800-599-5321 or visit shakeawake.com.

Free floral fineness

The Ikebana International Honolulu Chapter 56, the society dedicated to the centuries-old Japanese art of floral arranging, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a free exhibit that begins tomorrow at the Honolulu Hale courtyard.

More than 40 flower arrangements will be on display outside City Hall through Friday, including those by guest exhibitor Tomoaki Yamamoto, a professor from Kyoto, Japan.

Ikebana contrasts most Western floral design in its asymmetry. Designers strive to convey harmony between the flowers. Those who want to try their own hand at ikebana arranging can do it in the virtual reality of the Internet.
