No. 1 Stanford swamps Hawai'i water polo

Julie Gardner led seven teammates in scoring with three goals as No. 1 Stanford defeated No. 12 Hawai'i, 13-4, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Cardinal improved to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF.
Karin van Hoff, Chelsea Garner-Prohs, Colleen Schiman and Erin Kocher scored for the Rainbow Wahine, who fell to 7-6 and 1-3.
Hawai'i continues MPSF play Friday against Southern California at 6 p.m. and Saturday against Cal State-Northridge at 10 a.m. Both matches will be held at the Kahanamoku Complex.
SOFTBALL
Wahine win tourney: Sheri Oronoz pitched a five-hitter and Stacie Hirano scored the go-ahead run as Hawai'i defeated Oregon State, 2-1, in the championship game of the Chevron Malihini Softball Tournament yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
In accordance to NCAA rules for extra-inning games, Hirano was placed on second to start the top of the ninth inning. With Kate Judd at bat, Hirano advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on Monica Hoffman's wild pitch to make it 2-1.
Oronoz (11-5) closed out the Beavers with the help of a double play in the bottom of the ninth.
Judd hit an RBI single in the sixth to tie the score at 1.
Earlier, Oregon State beat New Mexico State, 3-1, to reach the title game.
HPU, Chaminade split: Hawai'i Pacific and Chaminade split a doubleheader yesterday, each winning by a 3-2 score at HPU's Windward Field.
Jessica Parra pitched a seven-hitter with five strikeouts and Genevieve Tsukayama drove in two runs to lift HPU in the first game.
Melissa Marquez pitched a seven-hitter with four strikeouts and drove in two runs to carry Chaminade in the second game.
HPU is 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the Pacific West Conference. Chaminade is 12-10 and 7-3.
BASEBALL
UH-Hilo swept: Santa Clara swept Hawai'i-Hilo, 7-2 and 7-3, yesterday at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.
Santa Clara's Joe Diefenderfer scattered nine hits and struck out eight in the seven-inning opener, and teammate Matthew Travis allowed eights and struck out nine over seven innings of the nine-inning second game.
Kaliko Oligo had two hits in each game for Hilo.
Santa Clara improved to 9-13, Hilo fell to 4-25-1.
