WINDWARD

Four rescued from boat

Fire rescuers brought four people to shore yesterday who reported that their motorboat was sinking in Kane'ohe Bay.

Three engine companies assisted the rescue team, which also had assists from the Coast Guard and Marines, said fire Capt. Richard Soo.

Rescue and Air 1 was dispatched after the 10:44 a.m. cell phone call from one of the boaters.

The victims and their boat were brought to He'eia Pier at about noon, Soo said.


EAST HONOLULU

Work to close Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay will be closed for about two weeks beginning April 10 for major repaving and roadway work.

Crews will be working on the nature preserve's public parking lot, loading zone, bus parking lot and staff parking lot. A major part of the construction will involve resurfacing the road between the beach and upper parking and picnic areas.

The preserve is expected to reopen April 24.


HONOLULU

Ex-restaurateur gets 30 months

Federal Judge Alan Kay yesterday sentenced former restaurateur Kengo Nozaki to 30 months in prison for filing false income tax returns.

Nozaki was convicted of submitting a false corporate tax return in 1992 for his now-defunct Kengo's Royal Buffet on Kapi'olani Boulevard and for filing false individual tax returns for 1993 and 1994.

Nozaki also was accused of skimming and not reporting about $112,000 from his business in 1992, $166,000 in 1993 and $68,000 during the first half of 1994.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Seabright said Nozaki, 61, was also assessed about $7,200 to help defray prosecution costs.


Cause of Tesoro fire not known

Officials have not determined the cause of a fire that started at about noon yesterday at the Tesoro oil refinery in Campbell Industrial Park.

No injuries were reported, and the fire was extinguished in 10 minutes, a Tesoro spokesman said.


Legislative update tonight

Lawmakers will update residents in Liliha, Kapalama and Nu'uanu on legislation at a community meeting at 6 p.m. today at Kawananakoa Middle School cafeteria.

Residents can share their concerns and ideas at the meeting, which is sponsored by state Sens. Suzanne Chun Oakland and Rod Tam and Reps. Felipe Abinsay, Lei Ahu Isa, Dennis Arakaki and Sylvia Luke.


Manoa Stream cleanup set

Malama o Manoa members will remove litter and trash from Manoa Stream starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The nonprofit group participates in the city's Adopt-A-Stream program and cleans a portion of the stream extending from the Woodlawn Drive bridge near Long's Drugs up to the Kahaloa Street bridge near Manoa Gardens at the district park.

The group gathers volunteers to clean both the stream and its banks at least every four months.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the Woodlawn Drive bridge.
