Eastern Division Boys: Beers put best foot forward

Landon Beers went from part-time starter last year to full-time scoring threat this year in leading Kaiser to a 10-0-0 record in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division play.

Kaiser High School senior Landon Beers played seven different positions last football season: cornerback, free safety, receiver, running back, slotback, kicker and return specialist.

He played only one in soccer — forward — but played it well enough to be named O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division Player of the Year in a vote of league coaches.

Beers, 5 feet 4 and 130 pounds, was a part-time starter last year and blossomed into the East's leading goal-scorer this season. He finished with 16 in 10 games, nearly twice as many goals as the next-highest total (nine by Moanalua's Breland Pedro).

Beers was joined on the OIA East All-Star first team by teammates Evan Masunaga, Matthew Stucke and Joshua Curtis.

Stucke, a senior, and Curtis, a junior, were key players on a defense that allowed one goal in the regular season. Masunaga, a senior, was a midfielder.

Kailua placed two players on the first team — junior midfielder Keoni Spencer-Crites and senior defender Roland Takeshita.

Pedro, a senior defender, was Moanalua's lone first-team selection. Others making the first team were Kalaheo senior defender Chris Kojima, Kahuku senior midfielder Thiago De Oliveira, Kalani senior midfielder Gavin Fujitani and Castle senior forward Nolan Miranda.

De Oliveira scored eight goals in the regular season, and Miranda had seven.

Kaiser's Herb Schreiner, who guided the Cougars to a 10-0-0 OIA East record, was named Coach of the Year. Kaiser scored 34 goals in the East and did not allow one until the final game.
