Western Division Boys: Top honor shared by three

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

When the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division boys soccer coaches tried to pick a Player of the Year after the season, they came up with three standout choices.

So they voted again. And came up with the same three.

It was tough separating Mililani senior goalkeeper Thomas Brown, Campbell senior striker Michael Ryman and Pearl City senior midfielder Daniel Park. So much so, that all three shared Player of the Year honors.

Brown helped the Trojans to a 9-0-0 record in the regular season, allowing only three goals.

Ryman led the West with 15 goals and helped the Sabers (6-2-1) to a second-place finish. Park was a bright spot on a Pearl City season that had a disappointing finish after the Chargers were forced to forfeit several games because of an ineligible player.

Mililani led the way on the West's All-Star first team with four selections. In addition to Brown, the Trojans were represented by senior defender Vance Harris, junior forward Nathan Amous and junior midfielder Christopher Castell.

Amous finished second in the division with 11 goals.

Campbell had three players on the first team: Ryman, junior defender Shaunsey Saito and senior midfielder Donovan Goboya.

Pearl City placed Park and junior Richard Shinn. 'Aiea also had two first-team selections: senior defender Derek Atta and senior midfielder Matt Itagaki.

Mililani's Jeff Yamamoto was named Coach of the Year.

After winning the West, the Trojans went on to capture the OIA championship — their fifth league title in the past eight years — and their second straight state crown.
