After winning its own Chevron Malihini Tournament over the weekend, the University of Hawai'i softball team claimed an individual award yesterday.

Freshman right fielder Denise Dahlberg was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week. The right-handed hitter from Chandler, Ariz., batted .500 (11 for 22) with three doubles, a triple and five RBIs last week in games during the Chevron Malihini Tournament and in a WAC doubleheader sweep against Loyola Marymount last Tuesday.

In the doubleheader sweep, Dahlberg batted 4 for 6 with four runs and an RBI. Her .324 batting average is second best among UH starters.

San Jose State freshman Carol Forbes, who also hails from Arizona, was named WAC Pitcher of the Week.

The Rainbows (18-12, 2-0 WAC) resume conference play with another doubleheader against Loyola Marymount (12-17, 0-2) at 5 p.m. today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The teams split two meetings during the Malihini tournament in games that did not count in the conference standings.

Sheri Oronoz (11-1, 1.56 ERA) and Melissa Coogan (6-5, 2.15) are expected to start for the Rainbows tonight. Oronoz leads the team with 11 starts and 112 innings. Coogan has 11 starts among her 13 appearances, and has pitched 62 innings.

The Rainbows are hitting .271, compared to .241 for their opponents.

Their ERA of 1.94 is almost a full run better than their opponents (2.89).
