Hashimoto is best of boys

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Think of Allen Iverson weaving through a defense in shin guards and cleats. Or Marshall Faulk without pads, sprinting after a round white ball.

Iolani senior Duke Hashimoto was named ILH Player of the Year after leading the Raiders to a 9-1-2 regular season record. The speedy forward scored 13 goals.

Then you can picture what Iolani School senior Duke Hashimoto is like on the soccer field. In a fast-moving game, he appears to play one speed higher than everybody else.

Hashimoto's lightning-in-a-bottle ability resulted in 13 goals, helping the Raiders to a 9-1-2 regular season record and a tie for first place with Kamehameha. It also earned him Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year honors in a vote of league coaches.

Hashimoto, a forward, was the only Iolani player named to the ILH All-Star first team.

Kamehameha, which won the league championship in a playoff against the Raiders, led the way with six first-team All-Stars: goalkeeper Zach McAngus, forward Kekoa Smith, midfielder David Gualdarama and fullbacks Kaui Macdonald, Bryan Lenharr and Gabe Chan.

Punahou placed two players on the first team: forward Satoshi Mitsuda and fullback Matthew Culver. Mitsuda, another speed demon, finished second to Hashimoto with 11 goals.

The other players named to the All-Star first team were Pac-Five forward Darin Fajota and Mid-Pacific midfielder Richard Higa. Fajota, who scored eight goals, attends Maryknoll.

Kamehameha's Andrew Ah New was named Coach of the Year. The Warriors needed a tie with Iolani and a victory over Punahou in the season's final three days to force the playoff with the Raiders. Kamehameha then won the playoff, 3-1.
