Bone marrow registry plans drive

The Hawai'i Bone Marrow Donor Registry will conduct donor registration and testing at the annual Ho'ike'ike at Kapi'olani Park on March 23-24.

The registry matches donors with patients who need bone marrow transplants because of terminal blood diseases such as leukemia. Each year, more than 16,000 people nationwide are diagnosed with some type of fatal blood disease.

The Hawai'i registry is seeking donors, especially of Asian and Pacific Island ancestry. They must be between 18 and 60 years old and in good health. The test is done by taking a small sample of blood.

Registration and testing will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the bandstand. For more information call the registry at 547-6154.

Limited water use urged today

The Board of Water Supply is urging customers from Punalu'u to Waimanalo to conserve water today while it makes the first of three new water main connections.

The board will be working with RCI Construction at the intersection of Woodward Lane and Kamehameha Highway in Punalu'u.

The company was to have drained the old main from 2 to 6 a.m. today. At 6 a.m. it was to begin connecting the new main; the work is expected to be completed at about 8 p.m.

The Kane'ohe-bound lane of Kamehameha Highway will be closed from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Traffic will be diverted to the Kahuku-bound lane.

New connections also will be made in Kahana and at the intersection of Hale'aha Road and Kamehameha Highway.

The water board is in the process of installing a major 36-inch main to carry water from the Punalu'u wells to Kane'ohe and Kailua.

Queen's seeks student volunteers

The Queen's Medical Center is seeking students for its summer volunteer program to explore careers in health care.

Seven-week sessions are offered June 3 to July 19, and June 17 to Aug. 2.

The program is open to high school and college students at least 15 years old by the start date. Volunteers must work two four-hour shifts a week, either in a clinical setting — with patients, visitors and staff — or in non-clinical areas such as offices or the gift shop.

For more information, call the volunteer office at 547-4397.
