Punahou wins ILH basketball opener

Rachel Kane had a team-high 17 points and Becky Hogue added 11 as Punahou defeated Sacred Hearts 55-44 in the opening game of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball season yesterday.

Punahou is the defending ILH champions.

Britney Aiwohi scored a game-high 34 points, including four three-pointers for the host Lancers.

  • Waiakea Invitational: Amber Lee scored 16 points and Ceslie Ma'afala added 15 points for McKinley as the Tigers defeated Honoka'a 46-31 at the Waiakea High gym in Hilo.

Amber Salvador led the Dragons with 10 points.

Host Waiakea got 18 points from Nancy Hoist in a 45-44 victory over Konawaena.

In an earlier game, Tita Hanohano scored 19 points and Jennifer Naleimaile added 11 points to lead Hilo past Waipahu 48-26.

The six-team tournament is being played in a pool format and continues through tomorrow.

WOMEN'S FOOTBALL

Blast tryouts, camp: The Pacific Blast Tryouts, Hawai'i's entry in the Women's American Football League, will be holding camps and tryouts this month.

The tryouts are at the University of Hawai'i's Cooke Field from 7-9 p.m. on March 26 and March 28 and 1-3 p.m. on March 30.

The Blast's camp is from noon-6 p.m. tomorrow and on March 23 at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

VOLLEYBALL

Time for Spring Break: About 500 youths, including teams from California, Oregon, Pennsylvania, British Columbia and Guam, will participate in the Impact Hawai'i Spring Break Volleyball Tournament, scheduled for March 23-25 at the University of Hawai'i.

Games for youngsters in categories of 14s, 16s and 18s will be played at Klum Gym, Gym 1 and Gym 2 on the UH campus. Games will be played from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. all three days. The 12s will play at a site to be determined.

FENCING

Second-place finishes: Janice Kato and Joshua Thurlow, of the Hawai'i Fencers Club, each placed second in their respective divisions at the United States Fencing Association North America Cup in Reno, Nev., March 8-11.

Kato took the silver medal in the Veteran Women's Epee Tournament, while the 15-year-old Thurlow took second in the Division II Men's Epee. Thurlow also placed 13th in the Division II Men's Foil and 23rd in the Division III Men's Foil.

Victoria Reventas of the Hawai'i Fencers Club finished 16th in the Division II Epee.
