Honoapi'ilani Highway (Maui)
- A 10-mile stretch running from Papawai Point to Lahaina.

Speed limit: 30 to 55 mph
Average vehicles per day: 24,368
- Maui police say drivers speeding and overtaking other traffic along the two-lane road are to blame for many head-on collisions.
- Planned improvements: State is working on a feasibility study on possibly creating three- and four-lane sections along the highway, providing passing zones for vehicles to reduce the risk of head-on crashes.
Mokulele Highway
- A two-lane, 7-mile stretch running from Kahului to Kihei.
2001 fatalIties: None, but numerous head-on collisions in recent years.

Speed limit: 30 to 45 mph
Average vehicles per day: 26,089
- As with Honoapi'ilani Highway, police blame speeding and drivers overtaking other vehicles.
- Planned improvements: State to begin work early this summer to widen the highway from two lanes to four to lower the number of head-on collisions cuased by drivers attempting to overtake other motorists. The $87 million project will be done in five phases and run until 2006.
