WINDWARD

Trying to solve sag in the road

The state Department of Transportation will try to determine the cause of a dip that has gradually increased across the Likelike Highway townbound lane in Kane'ohe.

The dip, just prior to the H-3 off ramp, has gotten so bad that the department has placed a warning sign at the spot and posted a lower speed limit in the area.

Gary Choy, head of the DOT's Design Branch, said consultant Geolabs Inc. has proposed investigating the dip by conducting exploratory borings into the ground.

If the state agrees to this method, a project could get under way within a couple of months, Choy said.

He said the rate of settlement isn't rapid but if necessary, the state could implement interim measures until a permanent fix is decided upon.
