Kamehameha rolls past Iolani, 39-26

The Iolani School girls basketball team was defeated by Kamehameha 39-26 last night in Interscholastic League of Honolulu action at Kekuhaupi'o Fieldhouse.

Iolani's Fabriann Gin picks up her dribble after being surrounded by three Kamehameha defenders. Megan Ching scored 13 points as the Warriors beat Iolani, 39-26.

But the Raiders might have suffered an ever bigger loss in Friday night's victory over Mid-Pacific. That's when, with about three minutes remaining, senior guard Trisha Nishimoto landed on another player's foot and turned her right ankle.

Nishimoto, who signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Hawai'i next year, was on crutches last night.

Iolani coach Glenn Takara said X-rays did not show a break, but Nishimoto is scheduled to have the injury examined further by an orthopedic surgeon. Takara said even in the best-case scenario, which would be a sprain, Nishimoto is expected to miss about two weeks.

Nishimoto, 5-feet-3, is one of the state's top outside shooters. She scored 16 points on Friday.

"We were prepared for Trisha, but the way we played tonight, they probably would have beaten us if they had her," Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said. "It's very unfortunate for them."

The Warriors (2-0) are not at full strength themselves. Junior point guard Tiffany Shim is nursing a stress fracture in her leg and is not expected to return for another six weeks.

Kamehameha, however, has depth on its roster and took advantage of it last night. Applying full-court pressure from the opening tip, the Warriors jumped out to an 8-0 lead after forcing the Raiders (1-1) into turnovers on their first four possessions.

Kamehameha built an 18-5 lead after one period and led 22-13 by halftime. Megan Ching, who finished with 13 points to lead all scorers, had 10 points in the first half mostly on transition baskets.

Iolani closed to 25-21 late in the third quarter, but Kamehameha went on an 8-2 run and the Raiders were held to one field goal and three points in the final period.

"(The Warriors) are deep, and they keep coming at you," Takara said. "We needed everybody to step it up a little bit, and we did well after we settled down. We played well without Trisha, but sometimes I think (the Raiders) still were looking for her even though she wasn't there. And we got tired. It's a tough situation."

The Warriors, who still must play ILH defending champion Punahou (2-0) and surprising Maryknoll (1-1) in the first round, are not exactly out of the woods yet, either.

"We don't really have anyone who can handle the ball like Tiffany," Cockett said. "We're still playing like pinballs, going all over the place. It all depends on how we can execute and how well we shoot the ball. Right now, we're just running around and hoping we score big."
