Rainbow Wahine 1-2-3 in 1,500-meter race

The University of Hawai'i swept the top three places in the 1,500-meter race at the Occidental College Distance Carnival meet on Friday at Eagle Rock, Calif.

Cheryl Smith was first in 4 minutes, 39.65 seconds, followed by Casey McGuire-Turcotte in 4:42.46 and Alethe West in 4:49.30.

UH also got a second-place finish from Natalie Kolodziej in the 800 in 2:18.91. Stefanie McDougall of Pomona-Pitzer was first in 2:17.48.


WATER POLO

• UH stops Northridge: Traci Trochinski scored three goals to lead the University of Hawai'i to a 11-4 victory over Cal State Northridge in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex yesterday.

Karin Van Hoff and Chelsea Garner-Prohs each had two goals the Rainbow Wahine (8-7 overall, 2-3 MPSF).

Melissa Hall had three goals for Northridge (2-8, 0-4.).


SOFTBALL

• BYUH shuts down HPU: Kassiopeia Hood pitched a four-hit shutout — her second shutout in two days — to help Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 2-0 victory over Hawai'i Pacific in a college softball game at BYUH field in La'ie yesterday.

The second game of a scheduled non-conference doubleheader was called because of rain.

Hood, a freshman from Las Vegas, struck out seven and walked none.

Juanita Vega scored both BYUH runs. Vega singled, then later scored on a throwing error following a double steal in the second inning. She hit a home run over the left-field fence in the sixth.

Brigham Young-Hawai'i is 7-10 overall, 1-3 in the Pacific West Conference. HPU is 12-7 and 2-2.

• Western New Mexico sweeps: Consecutive home runs by Erica Aguilar and Shellie Broyles lifted Western New Mexico to a 2-0 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in the first game of a PacWest doubleheader sweep at UHH field.

In the second game, Katie Gutierrez led off the game with a single, stole second and continued on to score when the ball got past the shortstop and centerfielder to give Western New Mexico a 1-0 victory.

Western New Mexico is 15-7-1 overall, 6-2 in the Pacific West. Hilo is 19-6 and 8-2.

Angela Slaugh held the Vulcans to Kelly Moore's sixth-inning infield hit in game one.


DIVING

• UH's Coyle 11th: Hawai'i sophomore Jon Coyle finished 11th in the men's platform during the final day of the Zone E Diving Championships at Stanford, Calif., yesterday.

Coyle scored 408.60 points. Arizona's Ruben Vaga won the event with 499.85 points.

A total of 15 divers (nine women, six men) qualified for the NCAA diving championships during the three-day meet. No UH divers qualified.


JUDO

• Nation's best: Masami Ito of Hawai'i Tokai International College was named Outstanding Female Judoka yesterday at the National Collegiate Judo Championships in San Jose, Calif.

Ito was the gold-medal winner at 57kg (125 pounds).

Freshman Morgan Koyama of Tokai won silver at 66kg (145 pounds).

Ito is from Japan and Koyama from Oregon.

Teruyoshi Yamaguchi is sensei of the Tokai program.

University of Hawai'i freshman Aaron Raney, competing for Shobukan, won silver at 73kg (160 pounds).

Brandon Maki, of Salt Lake Judo Club, who placed second at the Senior Nationals in 2000, lost in 60kg (132 pounds).
