Man rescues boy from cliff

A 6-year-old boy was rescued from the side of a cliff in Makakilo last night after a man working on a nearby satellite dish heard his calls for help.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said the boy had gone bike riding with two other children on a mountain road behind Hawaiian Waters Amusement Park. The boy fell from the road and down the side of the cliff to a narrow ledge about 6 to 8 feet below, Tejada said. Beyond the ledge was a drop of more than 50 feet.

The three children called for help and the satellite worker, a man from Manoa, drove up the dirt road to help, but his car broke down along the way. He ran the rest of the way, climbed down to the ledge and pushed the boy back up.

Firefighters arrived as the Manao man and the three children were walking down the road.

The child was not seriously injured, Tejada said.
