Sub repairs to be completed
The USS Greeneville is expected to enter drydock at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard around April 16 to complete repairs after the nuclear-powered submarine and a transport ship collided Jan. 27 in the Arabian Sea.
The investigation into what caused the accident continues, but the Navy relieved Cmdr. William Edwards of command of the Ogden Feb. 21. Cmdr. Lindsay Hankins remains in charge of the Greeneville.
The accident was the third for the Greeneville in less than a year. On Feb. 9, 2001, the sub collided with a Japanese fishing training vessel off Diamond Head, sinking the ship and killing nine on board. On Aug. 27, 2001, Greeneville briefly ran aground while trying to enter a harbor in Saipan.
WWII-era building vacated
Navy Region Hawai'i recently celebrated the move of its Human Resources Office out of old Building 1C as a historic preservation architect fights to save the building from demolition.
A Navy report on the move called the opening of the new offices in adjacent Building 1 "a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to create needed modern office space while preserving and restoring a treasured historical landmark."
Building 1C was built in 1942.
The Navy had planned on demolishing 1C as early as this month.
Honolulu resident Douglas P. Luna filed suit in Washington, D.C., two weeks ago to save the shipyard structure. Luna has said his next step will be to seek a temporary restraining order if the Navy attempts to go ahead with demolition of 1C.
