Ex-Little League coach arraignedA longtime coach of a Kailua Little League team was arraigned today in District Court on charges of first-degree sexual assault in a case involving a 12-year-old boy.
Mark Heyd, 46, an architect and former coach of the Kainalu Major League team, was charged yesterday and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Bob Kawamoto, the league's district administrator for Windward O'ahu and Kaua'i, said that Heyd was not due to coach the team this season.
The victim told police the assaults occurred over a nearly eight-month period, from July 10 last year until March 1.
Boy hospitalized in 'Aiea crash
A 16-year-old boy remained hospitalized at The Queen's Medical Center today after his car veered off the roadway and smashed into a KFC restaurant in 'Aiea early this morning.
The boy, a Waipahu resident, was driving without a license at 2:22 a.m., heading west on Kamehameha Highway. The car he was driving, a white 2000 Plymouth, ran off the road 216 feet west of Honomanu Street and crashed into the KFC building before coming to rest in the highway's center lane.
He was taken in critical condition with head, chest and leg injuries to Queen's, where his condition later improved to guarded, police said.
The driver had to be extricated from the car. Police suspect speed and alcohol were factors in the accident.
Arrest made in taxi robberies
Police arrested an 18-year-old Mililani man and are seeking his male juvenile companion in connection with two robberies of taxi drivers in Central O'ahu within two weeks.
The first case occurred at 10 p.m. on Feb. 27 when the suspects rode to Circle Mauka Street in Whitmore Village and robbed the 42-year-old driver. Then, at 9:20 p.m., they took a cab to Ka'ili'ula Loop in Mililani and robbed the 45-year-old driver there.
The arrested suspect has been released pending further investigation.
Man sought in Waipahu heist
Police are seeking a man in his 20s who yesterday robbed a Waipahu video store.
The robber allegedly entered Suzie's Adult Warehouse, 94-210 Leokane St., at 2:30 p.m. and pulled a knife on one of the employees. He then took money and fled on foot toward Farrington Highway, police said.
