Advertiser Staff

Marianne Martin of Hagadone Printing Co. and Ross Okamura, president of broadcast-sound production company Audio Bytes Corp., were named the Hawaii Advertising Federation's ad persons of the year at the 23rd annual Pele Awards ceremony held by the local chapter of the American Advertising Federation.

The Pele Awards, Hawai'i's version of the American Advertising Federation's ADDY Awards, were announced Saturday in a ceremony at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Winners go on to national competition, with winners of that announced in Miami in June.

Advertising, design and graphics firms based on Maui had a record showing, winning eight of 48 awards. A Kaua'i-based firm won one Pele; the rest went to O'ahu firms.

The federation's silver medal went to David Pellegrin, chairman of Honolulu Publishing Co. Three students, all graphics students at Honolulu Community College, received George Arthur Pellegrin Minority Scholarships: Arland Akamine, Chris Sekigawa and Kevin Ulep.

The Outstanding Young Advertising Person of the Year Award went to Jocelyn Lee, a media planner and buyer with Starr Seigle Communications. She also is president of Ad2, a club for junior advertising practitioners.

Mike Rosenberg, president and general manager of KITV-4, was honored as media person of the year by the American Advertising Association of Hawai'i. The association's Lifetime Achievement Award went to Don Carroll, who recently retired after 16 years at the helm of Oceanic Cable.

Best of Show Awards went to Laird, Christianson Harris Advertising for an anti-smoking television public service commercial for the state health department; Info Grafik for design of the book Kuki'o Underwater; and Studio Ignition for package design for Clara Confectioners.
