EAST HONOLULU

Home developer increases buffer

The developer of 58 homes near the Kamilonui Farmers Cooperative has agreed to increase the landscape buffer between the project and existing homes.

The measure pleases neighboring residents in Kealaula Kai who had been concerned about an emergency access road for nearby farmers that will go between their community and the new homes.

Schuler Homes, the developer, has agreed to provide a dirt lane for farmers to use in the event of a flood or if access is cut off. Residents, however, fear that farm trucks will use the dirt road from morning to night.

In a letter to residents and the Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board, Schuler Homes said it will plant a denser, thicker landscaped buffer, according to Gail Carr, a Kealaula Kai resident. Work is set to begin as soon as city permits are issued.

The developer plans to build single-family homes on an average of 7,500-square-foot lots that will sell for about $650,000 to $750,000.
