Have your golden moment with Oscar at awards party

By Wayne Harada

There's still time, if you have the bucks, to mosey up to Oscar (he with the bald pate and golden tan) at the Hawaii International Film Festival's Oscar Night America party, from 4 p.m. Sunday at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Monarch Room.

Honolulu this year is among seven of 38 cities with official Oscar parties to play host to the 8 1/2-pound statuette, the symbol of cinematic supremacy worldwide. Yep, a real Oscar is here for the celebration.

The party coincides with Sunday's telecast on ABC-TV (KITV Channel 4) of all the hoopla, hype and happenings at the 74th annual awards gala presented in Hollywood by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Those attending may have their photos taken with Oscar from 4 p.m., with TV festivities beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Ticket ranges:

  • $2,500 for a corporate table of 10, includes VIP seating, served food (no standing in line), wine, VIP gift bag, Flash Pass membership in HIFF's fall festival, an Oscar poster and Oscar program.
  • $500 per couple, includes a silver HIFF membership.
  • $150 per person, general admission (without HIFF Ohana membership).
  • $75 per person for HIFF Ohana members.

Dress is cocktail wear, black tie optional.

Information and reservations: 528-FILM, ext. 21.

Meanwhile, on Maui, the Maui Film Festival will hold an Oscar-watching party, too, but without the statuette, from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Castle Theatre at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

The live Oscar viewing is free, preceding MFF's first Wild on Water Awards, which begin at 7:30 p.m., with awards to be given to Best Big Wave Surfer, Best Surfer, Best Windsurfer, Best Kite Surfer, as well as Waterman of the Year and Waterwoman of the Year, along with several other water-related nods to individuals and films.

Tickets: $10 for the public, $7 for MFF Passport holders.

Information: (808) 579-9996.

If you're staying home, KITV will begin Oscar TV coverage (tape delayed) from 6 p.m. with a preview segment leading up to the 6:30 p.m. start of the annual "And the winner is..." ritual.
