UPW endorses Anderson for governor

Advertiser Staff

The United Public Workers union is endorsing Democrat D.G. "Andy" Anderson for governor.

The union has more than 13,000 active and retired members.

UPW state director Gary Rodrigues on Wednesday said the unions chose Anderson "because he is the only one whose word is as good as the earth. He was the only real choice."

The selection was made by a vote of the unions' Statewide Political Action Committee.

Anderson is a businessman and former Honolulu managing director.

He was a long-time Republican Party activist, serving in the state Legislature for 20 years and as former chairman of the Hawai'i Republican Party, but announced late last year he would run for governor as a Democrat.

Anderson said he is "honored and humbled" by the endorsement, and hopes as governor to bring together union, business and other interests to restore the state's economy.

Also running are Republicans Linda Lingle and John Carroll, and Democrats Ed Case and Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris.
