Punahou scored 23 runs on 16 hits in the third inning en route to a 30-5 victory over Maryknoll in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball game at Ala Wai Field yesterday.
"It's just one of those things," said second-year Punahou coach Eric Kadooka. "I've never seen anything like it before."
Punahou led 2-1 entering the bottom of the third. Kadooka said he started substituting after the Buffanblu batted around the first time as 29 batters went to the plate. By the end of the inning, all the Punahou starters were replaced. Maryknoll used four pitchers in the inning.
Kaohi Downing and Landon Nagata each had three hits for the Buffanblu, who finished with 25 hits.
Even with the big win, Kadooka was quick to point to last season.
"We beat (the Spartans) something like 20-2 in the first round, and they came back to beat us 3-2 in the second round," he said.

TRACK AND FIELD
Big meets this weekend: The first major meets of the public high school track and field season on O'ahu will be held tonight and tomorrow.
They are the 22nd annual Vernon Sakamoto Memorial meet at Kaiser High starting at 5 p.m. today, the Velasco meet at Radford's Ronald E. Velasco Stadium, listed at 6 p.m. today, and the George Yamamoto Invitational Relays at Mililani High tomorrow with running events starting at 5 p.m.
The private-school Interscholastic League of Honolulu will hold its weekly meet at Punahou at 8:30 a.m.
The first heat of each race at Kaiser today will be counted toward team scores and will be followed by up to three heats in the same event that do not score, "so that everyone can get a time," Kaiser athletic director Bill von Arnswaldt said.
It will be all running tonight at Kaiser as field events were held on Wednesday. A nonscoring 3-kilometer race at 4:30 will precede the first scoring races in boys and girls hurdles. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students.
Participating schools are Kaiser, Kailua, Kalani, McKinley, Kalaheo, Kaimuki, Roosevelt and Waipahu.
At Mililani tomorrow, field events will start at 1 p.m. All track events will be relays except for an invitational mile and invitational 100, Mililani coach Edwin Alfaro said. Admission is free.
Participating schools are Mililani, Pearl City, 'Aiea, Leilehua, Waialua, Moanalua, Wai'anae and Ka'uai.
No details were available on the Velasco meet.
The Sakamoto meet is named after Kaiser's first track coach. The Velasco meet is named after Radford's popular football coach, who died on the eve of a playoff game in 1981; and the Yamamoto meet is named after Mililani's first track coach, from 1973-84.
