Kalaheo downs Kaimuki in OIA opener

Kaimuki's Dalia Solia, left, and Kalaheo's Kalena Hatori scramble after a loose ball in the first quarter. Kalaheo won its O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division opener, 67-54.

First game of the season. A 49-game O'ahu Interscholastic Association winning streak on the line. An injured starter.

Pressure for Kalaheo High's girls basketball team?

"I just want us to play as well as we can," said Kalaheo head coach Chico Furtado. "The expectations for Kalaheo is very high. I realize that. I want the kids to realize that."

And the Mustangs (1-0) met those expectations, putting away a scrappy Kaimuki (1-1) team, 67-54, last night in their season opener at Kaimuki.

Without much help from sophomore standout Bre Carson, still nursing a sprained ankle sustained in last week's game against Leilehua, Kalaheo benefited from its deep bench, boasting four players with double figures in scoring.

"We have multiple people who can shoot the ball," Furtado said. "And that helped tonight."

The Mustangs jumped to a quick start, going on 6-0 and 7-0 runs in the first six minutes of the game. Every time Kaimuki drained a 3-pointer, Kalaheo would answer back, never letting the Bulldogs catch up. The Mustangs led by as many as 13 points in the first half.

But Kaimuki rallied late in the second quarter, behind the shooting of junior guard Dalia Solia, who posted 14 of her game-high 23 points in the first half. The Bulldogs closed out the half down 29-20.

Kaimuki played the second half like they had nothing to lose, getting more aggressive on defense and narrowing the score to as few as six points. But a series of missed shots and untimely fouls by the Bulldogs sealed the win for Kalaheo.

"I just wanted the girls to play hard, and they stuck it out all the way through," said Kaimuki head coach Mona Fa'asoa. "It's just that they were hitting 3s and we were hitting 2s. The stretch kept going on."

Points from beyond the arc made a difference. Kalaheo recorded eight 3-pointers, compared to Kaimuki's five (four of which were hit by Solia).

Both teams allowed too many second- and third-chance put-backs.

"As big as we are, I'm not satisfied with our rebounding," said Furtado, whose team features 5-11 post Latoya Wily, 5-10 forward Brina Fritzche and 5-9 guard Kalena Hatori.

Solia, Kaimuki's offensive threat, recorded a double-double by also adding 12 rebounds.

"She's a good athlete and she tries real hard," Fa'asoa said. "I wish we had one or two more of her on our team."

Four-time defending OIA champion Kalaheo extended its winning streak in OIA regular-season and postseason games to 50. The Mustangs haven't lost a league game since 1998, when three-time Player of the Year Brandy Richardson was on its roster.

"Yeah, there's pressure," said Fritzche, who led the Mustangs with 13 points. "Brandy said we'd better not break her record. So there's pressure, but we just wanted to do well."
