False credit, ID used in purchases

A surveillance camera took this photo of a couple sought by authorities on suspicion of attempting to make fraudulent purchases Tuesday at the Naval Exchange on Pierce Street.

Police and naval authorities were searching for a man and a woman caught on surveillance video using a stolen military ID card and a false military credit card at the Pearl Harbor Naval Exchange at 1475 Pierce St.

A soldier reported his military identification card stolen in September 2001 at the McDonald's in Wahiawa. Between last Sunday and Monday, a user of the ID card and false credit card bought more than $4,000 worth of merchandise, including a laptop computer and jewelry. On Tuesday, a man and a woman tried to purchase additional items but left the store when the salesclerk became suspicious

The man was described as in his mid-20s, 5 feet 10, 160 pounds, with a slim build, brown hair and brown eyes. The woman was described as in her mid-20s, 5 feet 3, with a slim build and long red hair.

Car crash kills man from Japan

A 24-year-old man was killed early yesterday on Tantalus Drive when the car he was driving went off the road and fell 12 feet to the embankment below.

The accident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. in the 3300 block of Tantalus Drive. The driver, a Japanese national, was alone in the two-door 1995 Nissan traveling south along the winding road when he lost control while trying to make a left turn, police said.

The car went off the road, landed on the embankment below and slammed into a tree. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
